Tom Rossau’s very first lamella lamp: twisted strips of birch or aluminum that wrap a single bulb in a sculpted, glowing cloud.

The TR5 is where Tom Rossau’s story begins. In 2005 he bent thin strips of birch veneer into a twisting ring, and the shape became his signature: an open, swirling shade that hides the bulb and scatters soft light across a table and up onto the ceiling. Each one is assembled by hand in Copenhagen, strip by strip. Choose from four diameters, from 15.75" for a small table to 39.4" for a long dining table or a high-ceilinged living room, and from five birch colors or two brushed-aluminum finishes. It arrives assembled, takes one standard E26 bulb, and hangs from a 118" fabric cable with a compact canopy that also works on sloped ceilings.

About the designer

Tom Rossau grew up in Odsherred, the curving coastal landscape north-west of Copenhagen that has drawn painters for generations, and his first lamps appeared in 2005. Every Tom Rossau lamp is still built by hand in the company’s own workshop on Frederiksberg Allé in Copenhagen, by a single lamp builder who signs the card that comes with it.

Buy once: durability and care

Dust the birch strips with a soft, dry brush; keep the lamp away from water, steam and humid rooms, because moisture softens the veneer and can make stained colors bleed. Like all natural wood, the birch slowly develops a patina and may shift its shape very slightly over the years: Tom Rossau calls it a living material. For the aluminum finishes: dust the brushed aluminum with a soft, dry brush. Keep water off the strips, which can mark them, and never press the lamellas together: aluminum is a soft metal and holds a dent. Tom Rossau covers manufacturing defects for 2 years. Have a licensed electrician install hardwired fixtures.

What size TR5 pendant do I need for my dining table?

A good rule is a lamp about half to two-thirds the width of the table: the 23.6" suits a table around 36–40" wide, the 31.5" a larger table, and the 39.4" a long or very wide table or a double-height room (our advice).

What bulb does the TR5 pendant take?

One standard E26 bulb, not included: max 60W incandescent or 15W LED. Tom Rossau recommends a warm 2700K A19/A60 LED of 5–8W.
