Peter Bristol Lighting: Where Helium, Cloak and Trace Work

Portrait of lighting designer Peter Bristol

Peter Bristol designs for Visual Comfort & Co., and his lights solve a common problem: how to get good light without a harsh, visible bulb. We use his series where glare would spoil the room.

“If glare would spoil the room, start with a Peter Bristol light.”

Our rule of thumb

Over tables and in stairwells

Helium floats clusters of etched opal glass globes on fine cables. The glass softens the light, and the open, airy form keeps a large fixture from feeling heavy over a dining table, in a stairwell or in a tall entry.

Bathrooms and vanities

Cloak folds metal around a hidden band of warm light, so there is no glare and no visible source, which is exactly what you want beside a mirror.

Halls, bedrooms and reading corners

  • Trace sconces bring a clean, minimal line to hallways and bedside walls.
  • Cymbal aims its LED into the shade for soft, indirect wall light.
  • Shielded hides its light behind a brass shade, good next to a reading chair.
