Danish lighting made with real craftspeople, from knitted shades to jute, rice paper and spun metal. Made by Hand is a Copenhagen design brand founded in 2014 to develop durable design objects with makers in Denmark and abroad. We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and Made by Hand is our pick for lamps that are as interesting switched off as they are switched on.

Why Made by Hand is worth it
Every collection is built around a craft and the workshop that masters it. Knit-Wit started in 2016, when Made by Hand set out to make a knitted lamp with real functional light; the shades are knitted in 3D from flame-retardant yarn by Kobleder in Austria, with no waste. The Workshop lamp is spun from aluminum by metal workers in the Danish countryside, and the Papier shades are built by hand, one piece of rice paper at a time, over a pre-bent frame.

How to choose
Over a dining table or island, go for a Knit-Wit or Flying pendant (the LED versions dim and need no bulb). For a softer, low-glare glow beside a bed, look at Fuse. For warm, natural texture, RO in jute or Papier in rice paper. For focused downlight over a counter, the Workshop or Copenhagen pendant.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Made by Hand from?
Copenhagen, Denmark. Made by Hand ApS was founded in 2014 and works with workshops and craftspeople in Denmark and abroad.
Who makes the Knit-Wit lamps?
Knit-Wit is designed by Iskos-Berlin. Made by Hand has the shades knitted in 3D by Kobleder, a third-generation family knitting company in Austria, with no waste in production. The Flying lamps are knitted there too.
Are these the US versions?
Yes.
Knit-Wit LED or bulb version: which should I choose?
The LED pendants have a built-in, dimmable 24W module (about 2,600 lumens, 3000K), so there is no bulb to buy. The bulb versions take an E26 bulb, and a frosted or clear bulb changes how the knit glows.
Do Made by Hand pendants need an electrician?
The Knit-Wit, Mollis, Flying and Workshop pendants are hardwired with a canopy, so plan on a licensed electrician. The floor and table lamps plug into a standard outlet, and the Fuse Portable is rechargeable.
How fast do Made by Hand orders ship?
In-stock lamps ship in 2–3 business days.
