Asano: hand-made Japanese washi paper lamps from Gifu, including Shigeru Uchida’s Paper Moon collection.
Asano Shoten has made Gifu lanterns (chochin) since Junsaku Asano founded the company in 1917 in the castle town of Gifu, Japan. Craftspeople still wind thin bamboo ribs around a form, paste on washi paper and trim it by hand, using materials and parts made almost entirely in Gifu Prefecture, including hand-made Mino washi. In 1990 Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida gave the craft a modern voice with Paper Moon, five lantern shapes for the table and floor. We’ve been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and every Asano lamp we sell is new.

How to choose
For a nightstand or shelf, a compact Paper Moon 1 or 2. For height in a corner, the slender Paper Moon 3. For the floor beside a sofa, the low Paper Moon 4, the round Paper Moon 5 or one of the Chochin lamps (Donguri, Tawara, Mari, each about 19.5″ tall). Grouping two or three shapes is the classic way to show them. All are paper lamps for dry indoor rooms.

Can Asano paper lamps be used outdoors or in a bathroom?
No. They are rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms; humidity damages washi paper.
