Collection: Visual Comfort & Co.

Visual Comfort & Co. at MetropolitanDecor: the Modern and Architectural collections, with verified specs, installation guidance and every finish on the current price list.

Visual Comfort & Co. was founded in 1987 in Houston, Texas, by Andy Singer and grew into America’s leading source of designer lighting. In 2022 it brought Tech Lighting, the Chicago company founded the same year and famous for low-voltage MonoRail, Kable Lite and FreeJack systems, into the fold. Tech Lighting’s fixtures now sell as the Visual Comfort & Co. Modern Collection, its systems and hardware as the Architectural Collection, and that is what we carry here.

The Modern Collection is led by designer Sean Lavin, whose pieces such as Belterra, Collier, Stratos and Bowman make up most of the range, with families by Kelly Wearstler, AvroKO and Mick De Giulio alongside. Every page on MetropolitanDecor is written from Visual Comfort’s own spec sheets: lumens, color temperature, CRI, dimmer type, damp or wet rating, hanging height and the exact item numbers, plus a Visual Comfort installation sheet to download.

We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009 and are an authorized Visual Comfort & Co. retailer. Among the pieces here, the Collier crystal series was shortlisted for the 2022 IDA Lighting Piece award and the Unilume LED Slimline under-cabinet light won the 2013 Product Innovation Award.

Choosing a Visual Comfort fixture

Start with the room. For a dining table, pick a chandelier or linear fixture about six inches narrower than the table and hang it 30–36 inches above the top; for a hall or bedroom, add the room’s length and width in feet and read that number in inches as a flush mount’s width. Each product page carries a sizing chart worked out for that piece.

Then check the light. Visual Comfort publishes delivered lumens, color temperature (usually 2700K or 3000K, sometimes a choice) and 90 CRI for its LED pieces, and we list the dimmer type that works: ELV and TRIAC for most 120V fixtures, 0-10V for 277V versions, low-voltage electronic dimmers for the rail systems. Damp-rated pieces can go in a bathroom or under a covered porch; only wet-rated, IP65 items belong in the open.

Finally, finishes and systems. Finish names follow Visual Comfort exactly, and low-voltage pendants and heads are offered in Monopoint, FreeJack, MonoRail and Kable Lite versions where Visual Comfort makes them. Our trade program helps designers specify complete rail layouts.

Frequently asked questions

Is MetropolitanDecor an authorized Visual Comfort & Co. retailer?

Yes. We sell Visual Comfort & Co.’s Modern and Architectural collections as an authorized retailer, with full manufacturer warranty, and have curated design-led lighting since 2009.

What happened to Tech Lighting?

Tech Lighting joined Visual Comfort & Co. in 2022. Its fixtures continue as the Visual Comfort & Co. Modern Collection and its rail, cable and hardware lines as the Architectural Collection; item numbers such as 700TD and 700MO are unchanged.

Which Visual Comfort pieces are damp or wet rated?

Most Modern Collection fixtures are damp rated for bathrooms and covered porches; outdoor pieces such as Bowman, Roton, Boxie and the bollards are wet listed to IP65 or IP66. The rating appears in the badge row and the specifications on every page.

Can I dim Visual Comfort LED fixtures?

Yes. Each page names the dimmer family Visual Comfort specifies for that fixture, typically ELV or TRIAC at 120V and 0-10V at 277V, with a link to the spec sheet’s dimming notes.

How do MonoRail, FreeJack and Kable Lite differ?

MonoRail is a bendable low-voltage rail, Kable Lite runs two parallel cables, and FreeJack is a quick-connect socket that mounts pendants and heads to a canopy, a rail adapter or a cable. The hardware pages here explain what fits what.

Which Visual Comfort products have won awards?

The Collier crystal series was shortlisted for the 2022 IDA Lighting Piece award and the Unilume LED Slimline won the 2013 Product Innovation Award and appeared in the 2012 IES Progress Report, according to the manufacturer.
