Michele De Lucchi Lighting: Tolomeo, Logico and Murano Glass

Portrait of architect and designer Michele De Lucchi

Michele De Lucchi is an Italian architect as well as a lamp designer, and it shows: his lights are planned around tasks. We specify his work in two ways, the Artemide pieces for everyday function and the Produzione Privata Murano glass when a room needs a handmade centerpiece.

“Use a Tolomeo where someone works or reads, and a Murano piece where guests gather.”

Our rule of thumb

Task lighting that lasts

The Tolomeo, which he designed with Giancarlo Fassina in 1987 and which won the Compasso d'Oro in 1989, is our default for desks, reading chairs and home offices: its articulated arm and fully adjustable head put light where the work is, and it mounts on a weighted base, a desk clamp or an inset pivot. It comes in sizes from Micro to Mega, so one family can cover a bedside, a desk and a reading corner.

Over tables and in living rooms

  • Logico uses a blown-glass diffuser for soft, ambient light, good over a dining table or in a stairwell.
  • Castore, Dioscuri and Ipno come as table, wall and pendant versions for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Led Net is a ceiling light for rooms with low ceilings or where a pendant would get in the way.

Produzione Privata: the handmade side

Produzione Privata is the workshop label he founded in 1990 with Sibylle Kicherer to make experimental objects, free of commission, with skilled Italian craftspeople. Its laboratories work in glass, ceramics, wood and metal, and the Murano pieces are blown one at a time, so each is similar but never identical. Acquatinta, named after the tinted waters around the Murano glassblowers, has a single mouth-blown diffuser that also houses the lamp holder. Acquaparete, Acquamiki, Chapeau, Perseo and Trellise extend the family for walls and smaller spaces.

Our rule of thumb: use a Tolomeo where someone works or reads, and a Murano piece where guests gather.
