Peter Bowles and Original BTC: Bone China Lighting for Real Rooms

Original BTC founder Peter Bowles with the Original BTC team

Peter Bowles founded Original BTC in 1990 and was the first designer to use bone china for lighting. We specify it where a room needs a soft, glowing light that looks handmade, because it is.

“A row of Hectors over the island, one by the bed, one on the desk.”

Our rule of thumb

Where the Hector works

The Hector, one of his first designs, is a bone china dome. Hang a row of pendants over a kitchen island, use the wall version beside a mirror or a bed, and keep the table lamp for a desk or console: the same shape ties the rooms together.

Why bone china

Bone china glows when lit, so it gives warm, diffused light without glare. Original BTC casts it in its own Stoke-on-Trent factory over several days, which is why each piece is made in England.

More from the house

  • Hatton and Stanley pendants over kitchen islands and dining tables.
  • Cobb rise-and-fall pendants when you want to adjust the drop over a table.
  • Magnus chandeliers and linear pendants for long dining tables.
  • Oval brass bulkheads for bathrooms, porches and indoor-outdoor walls.
