Collection: Coolicon

Coolicon: British enamel pendant lights since 1933, still enamelled by hand in England.

The Standard Coolicon shade was patented in 1933 as a hard-working factory light: its vented gallery let heat escape from high-wattage bulbs, and its glossy vitreous enamel stood up to workshop life. After an original shade was found in a design archive in 2013, Coolicon restarted production in Britain in 2015 with the same techniques and materials. We’ve been curating design-led pieces since 2009, and every Coolicon shade we sell is genuine and fitted with a US E26 socket.

Why vitreous enamel

Vitreous enamel is glass fused to steel in a kiln, coat by coat. It gives Coolicon shades their deep, glossy color, and it doesn’t fade, rust or give off VOCs. A soft cloth is all the cleaning it needs.

How to hang them

Coolicon designs its shades to hang low, with the gallery vents just above eye level. Over a dining table, use odd numbers of Originals lined up with the place settings, or one Large over a round or square table. Over a long table, pair Large shades, about one per two place settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coolicon a British brand?

Yes. Coolicon lampshades have been made in Britain since the 1933 patent; today they are enamelled by hand in England. Every shade we sell is genuine Coolicon, fitted with a US E26 socket.

What is the difference between the Original and the Large Coolicon pendant?

The Original is 9″ across and 6″ tall, a focused light for counters, desks, bedsides and clusters. The Large is 15.75″ across and 9.6″ tall and lights a whole table or room on its own. Both use an E26 bulb up to 60 W.

Are Coolicon shades painted?

No. They are vitreous enamel: glass fused to steel in several firings at over 800 °C, so the color won’t fade and the surface handles kitchen steam.

Can I use a Coolicon pendant in a bathroom or outdoors?

They are made for indoor use (IP20), so keep them away from showers, tubs and outdoor spaces.

How many colors are available?

We carry 15 colors in both sizes, from Jet Black and Original Green to Powder Pink and Terracotta.

How fast do Coolicon lights ship?

In-stock lights ship in 2–3 business days, free by ground to the 48 contiguous states.
