Tom Rossau’s first lamella design turned to face you: a ring of twisted birch strips that glows on the wall like a sculpture.

The TR5 wall light takes the spiraling birch ring of Tom Rossau’s 2005 TR5 pendant and mounts it flat against the wall, so the lamellas fan out around the bulb like the petals of a flower. Lit, it throws a warm, patterned glow onto the surrounding wall; unlit, it reads as a piece of wall art. It comes in two diameters, 15.75" and 23.6", in natural birch, mounted on a compact 5" wooden backplate and built by hand in Copenhagen.

About the designer

Tom Rossau grew up in Odsherred, the curving coastal landscape north-west of Copenhagen that has drawn painters for generations, and his first lamps appeared in 2005. Every Tom Rossau lamp is still built by hand in the company’s own workshop on Frederiksberg Allé in Copenhagen, by a single lamp builder who signs the card that comes with it.

We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and the TR5 wall light is one of the few sconces that works as art when it is switched off. It brings the handmade warmth of Danish birch to a wall without taking up an inch of floor or table.

Buy once: durability and care

Dust the birch strips with a soft, dry brush; keep the lamp away from water, steam and humid rooms, because moisture softens the veneer and can make stained colors bleed. Like all natural wood, the birch slowly develops a patina and may shift its shape very slightly over the years: Tom Rossau calls it a living material. Tom Rossau covers manufacturing defects for 2 years. Have a licensed electrician install hardwired fixtures.
