A pendant whose single mouth-blown Murano glass diffuser also houses the lamp holder: one of Michele De Lucchi’s best-known lights, made in Italy.

Acquatinta takes its name from the tinted waters around the glassblowers of Murano, where it was first made. Michele De Lucchi and Mario Rossi Scola designed it in 1996 around one simple idea: a single blown diffuser whose shape holds the bulb and lamp holder, so the mechanics disappear and only the glass and the light remain. Each diffuser is blown by hand, so no two are exactly alike. The Silver Mirror version is a transmirror glass: a polished silver mirror by day that turns partly transparent when the light inside is on. The shade measures 8.7″ across and 8.3″ high and takes one E12 bulb up to 60 W.

Produzione Privata is the workshop label architect and designer Michele De Lucchi founded in 1990 with Sibylle Kicherer, to make experimental objects free of commission with skilled Italian craftspeople. Its laboratories work in glass, ceramics, wood and metal; the Murano pieces are blown one at a time, so each is similar but never identical.

Buy once: durability and care

Glass and metal made to last for decades. Switch off and let the lamp cool before cleaning. Dust the glass and metal with a soft dry cloth; for fingerprints, use a cloth lightly dampened with water (or a mild glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth, never on the lamp) and dry it. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

What does the Silver Mirror Acquatinta look like when it is switched on?

By day the transmirror glass reads as a shiny silver mirror. With the bulb on it turns partly transparent, so you see a soft glow and the bulb inside. In very bright sunlight hints of transparency can show even when it is off.
