An incense burner that doubles as an orin bell: a brass bowl on a wooden base from KUON’s Tone series, handmade in Takaoka.
KUON’s Tone series draws on the old link between towers and sound in places of prayer, from church bell towers to temple pagodas. The Rinko is its incense burner, and it is also an orin bell. Fill the brass bowl with incense ash, or use a stick holder under 90 mm (3.5″), and it is a refined incense burner; empty it and strike it, and it rings with a soft, lingering tone. (It cannot ring while filled with ash.) The bowl sits on wood — zelkova on the Gold version, maple on the Silver — and measures 2.6″ across and 1.6″ high.

Why we carry it
We’ve been curating design-led pieces since 2009, and we look for objects that are well made, honest about their materials and a pleasure to use. KUON (空穏, “calm sky”) is the mindfulness and interior line of Yotsukawa Seisakusho, a copperware maker founded in 1946 in Kanaya-machi, Takaoka City, the birthplace of Takaoka’s famous metal-casting industry. Working with the town’s specialist artisans and workshops, it pairs traditional Takaoka techniques with soft, contemporary forms. Each piece is made by hand, so the finish can vary slightly from one to the next.
Buy once: durability and care
Our care advice: wipe with a soft, dry cloth after use and avoid abrasive pads or polish, which can scratch the finish. Each piece is handmade, so small differences in finish and color are part of its character. Empty the ash before using it as a bell.
