The ENGAWA bench is 35.5" long, 13.8" deep and 18.1" high, built from FSC-certified oak and finished in a deep black stain that lets the grain show through. Instead of four matching legs it stands on an asymmetric pair of panels, and the top is beveled so it flows into the legs without a hard edge, a detail that shows the handwork behind it. Use it in an entry to sit and tie your shoes, at the foot of a bed, or as a low table for books and a lamp in a living room. It is made in Poland and intended for indoor use.

The designer: Carsten Gollnick

Carsten Gollnick (born 1966) founded his German studio, Carsten Gollnick Design, in 1997. His work looks at the daily rituals and culture an object will live with, and Japan has shaped his thinking since the start of his career: no object should outrank another, because even the smallest piece has a use and a meaning. The studio has designed more than 100 products, works with skilled craftspeople on bespoke commissions, and has won the iF Design Award, the German Design Award and the Red Dot. For blomus he also designed the MAKOTO tableware.
