Yamagiwa Mayuhana Mie Pendant Light by Toyo Ito

Toyo Ito’s largest Mayuhana pendant: three nested spun-fiberglass shades, 20 inches across.

The Mayuhana Mie pendant hangs three nested shades of spun fiberglass on a steel frame. Each shade is formed by spinning the frame while a continuous stream of fiberglass is laid over it, so the light filters through several layers into a soft, even glow. At 20 inches across and 19 inches tall, it is hardwired with a 5.5-inch canopy into the ceiling.

Why we carry it

We’ve been curating design-led lighting since 2009. Yamagiwa, founded in Tokyo in 1923, is a Japanese lighting maker that works with architects and designers; it makes the Jakobsson Lamp today and produces Toyo Ito’s Mayuhana series. We source it through Yamagiwa’s official US distributor, so you get the authentic lamp with US electrical (120V AC).

Buy once: durability and care

AMEICO’s care notes: don’t place the light in high humidity or in a bathroom; set it up on a level surface so it can’t fall over, and keep it away from combustible or volatile materials. The distributor doesn’t publish cleaning instructions; our advice: dust the shades gently with a soft, dry brush with the lamp switched off and cool, and avoid water and cleaners.

Frequently asked questions

What bulb does the Yamagiwa Mayuhana Mie Pendant take?

No. It is rated IP20 for indoor use, and AMEICO advises against high humidity and bathrooms.
