Yamagiwa Mayuhana Mie Floor Lamp by Toyo Ito

Toyo Ito’s cocoon-like floor or table lamp: three nested spun-fiberglass shades that glow from within.

The Mayuhana Mie is a floor or table lamp made of three nested shades of spun fiberglass on a steel frame. Each shade is made by spinning the frame while a continuous stream of fiberglass is laid over it, so the light passes through layer after layer and comes out soft and diffused. At 19.5 inches across and tall, it sits on the floor or on a low table.

Why we carry it

We’ve been curating design-led lighting since 2009. Yamagiwa, founded in Tokyo in 1923, is a Japanese lighting maker that works with architects and designers; it makes the Jakobsson Lamp today and produces Toyo Ito’s Mayuhana series. We source it through Yamagiwa’s official US distributor, so you get the authentic lamp with US electrical (120V AC).

Buy once: durability and care

AMEICO’s care notes: don’t place the light in high humidity or in a bathroom; set it up on a level surface so it can’t fall over, and keep it away from combustible or volatile materials. The distributor doesn’t publish cleaning instructions; our advice: dust the shades gently with a soft, dry brush with the lamp switched off and cool, and avoid water and cleaners.
