A sculptural table lamp topped with a wide metal brim, like a hat lifted in greeting: Michele De Lucchi’s Chapeau, made in Italy.
The Chapeau table lamp brings De Lucchi’s “hats off” idea to a sideboard or desk. A wide metal brim, 16.5″ across, crowns a body of borosilicate glass, reversing the usual lamp of a metal frame and a glass shade. The light spreads softly beneath the brim while a small glow shows above it. The lamp stands 21.6″ tall and is made in Italy by Produzione Privata.

Who this is not for
- Small nightstands: the brim is 16.5″ across, so it needs a surface of about 18″ or more (our advice).
- Anyone who needs a focused reading or task light: it gives a soft, ambient light.
- Outdoor use: it is made for indoor rooms.
Why we carry it
We’ve been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and we look for pieces with a real idea behind them and real hands in the making. Produzione Privata is the workshop label architect and designer Michele De Lucchi founded in 1990 with Sibylle Kicherer, to make experimental objects free of commission with skilled Italian craftspeople. Its laboratories work in glass, ceramics, wood and metal; the Murano pieces are blown one at a time, so each is similar but never identical.
Buy once: durability and care
Glass and metal made to last for decades. Switch off and let the lamp cool before cleaning. Dust the glass and metal with a soft dry cloth; for fingerprints, use a cloth lightly dampened with water (or a mild glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth, never on the lamp) and dry it. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the Chapeau table lamp?
It stands 21.6″ tall with a 16.5″ brim. Allow a surface at least 18″ wide (our advice).
What is the concept behind the Chapeau table lamp?
De Lucchi turned the lamp inside out: the glass forms the body and a metal brim acts as the shade, like a hat on top.
What is the Chapeau table lamp made of?
Borosilicate glass with a metal brim, made in Italy.
Where does the Chapeau table lamp work best? (our styling advice)
On a sideboard, console or wide desk, alone or as one of a pair at each end of a long credenza.
Is there a Chapeau pendant to go with the table lamp?
Yes. The Chapeau pendant shares the same 16.5″ brim and glass idea.
How do I clean the Chapeau table lamp?
Switch it off and let it cool, then dust the brim and glass with a soft dry cloth; for marks on the glass, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and dry it.
