This Pokeboo keeps everything that makes the packable boot special — thin, flexible natural rubber, a nylon lining, a drawstring collar, about 1.2 lb a pair and a carry bag with a carabiner — and adds a reinforced tread sole. On slippery or gravelly ground, muddy paths and wet roads, the deeper pattern gives extra grip and sturdiness while keeping the flat, barefoot-like feel. It still rolls up into its bag when you are done. Black with a green collar.

Pokeboo is the packable boot line from ATOM Corporation of Takehara, Hiroshima, a Japanese maker of work gloves and rubber boots, including the soft, close-fitting boots used for planting rice. Pokeboo applies that know-how to a thin natural-rubber boot that rolls up into its own carry bag; it won a Good Design Award in Japan in 2018.

Buy once: durability and care

Wipe the outside with a cloth and cool water. Remove the lining, wash it by hand and line-dry it. Never tumble-dry, and keep petroleum products away, since they react with rubber. Natural rubber can “bloom” with a white, powdery film; remove it with light soap and cool water. Store dry and out of direct sun, with newspaper inside to hold the shape.
