Pokeboo boots are made of thin, flexible natural rubber with a nylon lining, light enough that a pair weighs about the same as a bottle of water (1.2 lb). They come from ATOM Corporation of Hiroshima, a maker of rubber work boots, including the soft, close-fitting boots used for planting rice. The fit hugs your foot and calf, a nylon collar closes with a drawstring, and the flat, reinforced sole has a textured tread so you can feel the ground. When the rain stops, roll them up into the included nylon carry bag, which has elastic compression straps and a carabiner, and can hold your other shoes while you wear the boots. Pokeboo won a Good Design Award in Japan in 2018.

Buy once: durability and care

Wipe the outside with a cloth and cool water. Remove the lining, wash it by hand and line-dry it. Never tumble-dry, and keep petroleum products away, since they react with rubber. Natural rubber can “bloom” with a white, powdery film; remove it with light soap and cool water. Store dry and out of direct sun, with newspaper inside to hold the shape.
