A handcrafted glass globe with a circular optic pattern blown inside: it throws rings of light onto the ceiling, in Clear or Smoke, with a dimmable LED filament or incandescent lamp.
- ✓ Optic-pattern globe
- ✓ Clear or Smoke
- ✓ LED filament or incandescent
- ✓ Projects light rings
- ✓ Dimmable
- ✓ Damp rated
The Besa Bombay is a semi-flush ceiling light built around a blown glass globe with a circular optical pattern on its interior. Light passing through the pattern casts rings onto nearby surfaces, and the lamp filament stays faintly visible behind the glass, so it works like a decorative pendant that sits near the ceiling. Clear is the brighter, more sparkling choice; Smoke softens the glow and reads darker and moodier by day.
Order it with incandescent lamping (one 60W A19 lamp, not included) or as the LED version with an 8W replaceable A19 LED filament lamp included: 800 lumens at 3000K, CRI 90+, rated 25,000 hours, dimmable. The 5-inch canopy and glass retainer come in Black or Satin Nickel. Besa’s Bombay video is in the gallery.

Best for
Use the Bombay in entries, hallways, dining nooks, bedrooms and bathrooms where you want the ceiling to do something. Besa also makes the Bombay globe as cord and stem pendants and as an outdoor pendant. Related: Niles 10 bubble glass semi-flush, Belu ribbed drum.
Who this is not for
- Outdoor porches, soffits or covered patios: this ceiling version is rated for damp interior locations only (Besa makes a separate outdoor Bombay pendant).
- Anyone who wants a plain, even diffuser: the optic pattern and visible filament are the point of this fixture.
- Very low ceilings where every inch counts: the globe drops about 9.4 inches.
Why we carry it
We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and Bombay is one of the few semi-flush lights that makes the ceiling part of the show: the optic pattern paints light across the room, and the Smoke glass turns it into a quiet dark sphere by day. Besa Lighting pairs American design with European glass artisanship: its shades are hand-blown by skilled artisans using techniques passed down for generations, then hand-inspected at Besa’s factory in Ohio for color, pattern, thickness and size before they ship.
Buy once: durability and care
Switch off and let it cool, then wipe the globe with a soft cloth lightly dampened with mild soapy water and dry it; avoid abrasive cleaners (our advice). The LED filament lamp is replaceable and rated for 25,000 hours. Installation by a licensed electrician is recommended; 90°C supply wire is required for incandescent lamping.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of the Besa Bombay semi-flush?
The glass globe is 9.8 inches in diameter and 8.4 inches high, the drop is about 9.4 inches overall, and the canopy is 5 inches, per Besa’s spec sheet. Each globe is handcrafted, so allow for slight variation.
Clear or Smoke: which Besa Bombay glass should I choose?
Clear gives the brightest light and the crispest rings on the ceiling. Smoke tones the output down, hides the lamp a little more and reads as a dark glass sphere when off; it suits moodier rooms and bedrooms.
How bright is the Besa Bombay with the LED filament lamp?
The LED version gives 800 lumens at 3000K with CRI 90+, is dimmable and uses an A19 filament lamp (included). The incandescent version takes one 60W A19 lamp (not included) and dims with a standard incandescent dimmer.
Is the Besa Bombay suitable for a bathroom ceiling?
Yes. Besa rates it for damp locations, interior use only, so it suits bathroom, laundry and powder-room ceilings. It is not rated for outdoor ceilings or direct water spray.
Does the Besa Bombay show the light bulb?
Yes, by design: the filament is faintly visible through the glass, which is why a filament-style lamp looks best in it. The optic pattern then projects rings of light outward.
How do I install the Besa Bombay semi-flush?
It is hardwired and installs directly to a standard 4" octagonal outlet box, centered on the fixture; 90°C supply wire is required for incandescent lamping. Besa’s spec sheet and installation guide are linked above, and we recommend a licensed electrician.
