Why we carry it

We’ve been curating design-led pieces since 2009. Ucon Acrobatics is a Berlin design label known for minimal, city-ready backpacks and bags, built from recycled and vegan materials. The Lotus Infinity Series is made from PUrTEX∞, a material Ucon Acrobatics developed over several years: recycled textile waste finished with a tough, solvent-free polyurethane coating. It looks and feels like smooth leather, resists scratches and shrugs off everyday rain.

About the materials

Ucon develops its materials from scratch and is candid that no material is 100% sustainable. It puts its main effort there because, citing McKinsey and the Global Fashion Agenda, more than 70% of the fashion industry's greenhouse gas emissions come from raw-material production and processing. The label has used recycled polyester from PET bottles since 2016 and has been a PETA partner, and so a fully vegan company, since 2015. Because fibre made from bottles is hard to recycle again, its stated next goal is polyester made only from recycled textiles.

PUrTEX∞, the Lotus Infinity material on this bag, took more than two years to develop with one of the world's largest material manufacturers. Two thin PU films give the grain and colour, a cross-linked PU foam beneath gives the soft hand, and the lower half is an interlock knit of recycled PET made from 100% recycled textiles. The stable foam structure let Ucon cut the PU content by 30%. In the maker's abrasion test, PUrTEX∞ showed no wear after more than 100 rotations under a 1 kg scraper, while a standard market material wore through after one.
