Why we carry Nova of California

Nova says it is the oldest lighting company in North America: founded in Brooklyn in 1923, now working from Venice Beach. Its design director Peter Morelli developed the arc lamps for the American market, and by 1970 the brand was being called the king of arc lamps. We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and Nova earns its place for one reason: the proportions look expensive and the build is meant to stay in the house for years.

Care, bulbs and dimming

Dust with a dry cloth and skip harsh cleaners. Nova says a damp cloth is fine on clear or mirrored glass, and that a standard touch-up pen covers minor scratches on wood or gold leaf. The 14W A19 E26 light source comes with the lamp; for dimming, Nova recommends quality dimmable, flicker-free LEDs.

LED or incandescent?

Shop by lumens, not watts: lumens say how bright a bulb is, while watts only say how much power it pulls. The factory LED in this semi-flush ceiling light is 14W and puts out 1500 lumens, roughly the output of a 100W incandescent, using a fraction of the power and giving off far less heat. An incandescent bulb has a slightly rounder, warmer glow but runs hot and wears out sooner. If you ever swap bulbs, match the base type and pick a dimmable, flicker-free LED at 2700K so the light stays consistent. Our LED vs. incandescent bulb guide has a chart that matches old wattages to the right LED.
