Lamp Materials Guide: Steel, Marble, Lucite, Linen, Wood and Glass
The material a lamp is made from changes its weight, its light and how it ages. This guide explains the materials you will see on our lighting and what to expect from each.
- Steel: strong and stable, which is why many tall arc lamps are built from it. A steel body holds its shape and carries weight without bending.
- Marble: a natural stone base that adds weight and keeps a tall lamp steady. Veining and tone differ from base to base, so no two are identical.
- Lucite and acrylic: clear or tinted, with a glassy look but lighter and tougher. Wipe with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Linen and fabric: shades that soften and spread the light. A dry cloth or lint roller keeps them clean.
- Wood: warm and natural, from walnut to ash and oak. Expect grain and color to vary slightly from piece to piece.
- Glass: clear, frosted or mirrored. A damp cloth is fine for cleaning.
- Porcelain: smooth, hard and cool to the touch, with a refined, gallery look.
Care in short
Dust with a dry cloth, skip harsh cleaners, and unplug a lamp before you clean around the socket. For bulbs, see our LED vs. incandescent bulb guide. For colors and metals, see the lamp finishes guide.
