At 23.6 in across and under 8 in deep, its fluid curve reads as a single sweep of glossy colour overhead, in red, black or white, while an opal diffuser closes the underside and softens three bulbs into one generous, dimmable pool of light. Light quality and how it performs

Pangen gives direct light. The lacquered metal top is opaque, so all the light is sent downward through the opal polycarbonate diffuser, which spreads three bulbs into one wide, even disc of light without glare. Over a table, that means the surface and the faces around it are lit softly and evenly, while the room above stays calm and the coloured dome reads as a shape against the ceiling.

With three E26 sockets of up to 46W each, Pangen can put out plenty of light for a large table. The maker lists it as dimmable: use dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer to set the level for meals or entertaining.

Size and placement

Over a dining table. As general guidance, hang the bottom of the dome about 28 to 34 in (71 to 86 cm) above the tabletop. At 23.6 in across, one Pangen suits a round table of about 42 to 54 in; two in a row suit a rectangular table of about 72 to 96 in, spaced around 36 in apart on centre.

Over a kitchen table or island. Two Pangen pendants over a 7 to 8 ft island, about 30 to 36 in above the counter, give even working light. For smaller islands, a single dome centred over the surface works well.

In an entry or stairwell. Keep at least 7 ft (213 cm) between the floor or nearest step and the bottom of the dome. Because Pangen is shallow, it suits entries with moderate ceiling heights as well as tall stair halls.

Installation. Pangen is hardwired to a ceiling junction box with a chromed 5.1 in ceiling rose, on a transparent power cable. The maker drawing shows a suspension of up to 118.1 in (300 cm), shortened to the drop you want. A licensed electrician should install it.

Ceiling version. For low ceilings, corridors and bedrooms, FontanaArte also makes Pangen as a flush ceiling light, sold as a separate product.

Care

Switch off the power and let the bulbs cool. Dust the lacquered dome with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, wipe with a cloth lightly dampened with water and mild soap, then dry; avoid solvents and abrasive pads that could dull the gloss. Wipe the opal diffuser gently with a soft cloth.
