The FontanaArte Equatore floor lamp is a plug-in LED reading and ambient lamp for the side of a sofa, a reading chair, a bedroom corner or a hotel lounge. It reinterprets the classic lamp with a glass shade in a surprising way: the glass dome is empty, and the light comes from two thin luminous discs set into a metal band around the middle of the shade, like the equator on a globe. The lower disc throws light down onto your book or side table, the upper one lights up the tinted glass cap, and a dimmer on the cord sets the mood. Two heights and three metal finishes are available.

Light quality and how it performs

Equatore splits its light in two. The bottom LED disc, with internal screens arranged in layers, sends an even, glare-free pool of light downward, so it works as a genuine reading lamp beside a chair. The top disc lights the glass cap from inside, giving the lamp its glowing, jewel-like crown and a soft ambient halo. The integrated LED is warm 2700 K with a high colour rendering index above 90, so skin tones, fabrics and wood look natural. The Small gives 2900 lumens, already plenty for reading; the Medium gives 4500 lumens, enough to light a good part of a living room. A dimmer on the cord lets you take it down to a low evening glow. The LED is built in, so there are no bulbs to buy or replace.

Size and placement

The Small is 53.1 in (135 cm) tall with a 10.5 in (27 cm) glass shade; the Medium is 68.8 in (175 cm) tall with a 14.6 in (37 cm) shade. As general guidance:

• Beside a sofa: the Small suits low, lounge-style sofas, placing the light near shoulder height when seated; the Medium suits taller sofas and wingback chairs, or standing beside a sofa arm to light the whole seating area.
• Beside a reading chair: set the lamp just behind and to the side of the chair so the lower disc throws light over your shoulder onto the page.
• Footprint: the round base is compact; allow roughly the shade's diameter of clear space around the lamp so the glass is not knocked.
• Bedrooms and corners: a Medium in a corner provides ambient light that replaces an overhead fixture in the evening.

Care

Unplug the lamp before cleaning. Wipe the glass shade with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water or a mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth, then dry. Dust the metal stem and base with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive or solvent cleaners on the polished finishes. Lift the lamp by the stem, not the glass.
