Light quality and how it performs

Cheshire works like a small pendant on a stem. The painted dome is opaque, so it hides the bulbs and keeps glare out of your eyes; underneath, an opal polycarbonate diffuser softens the light before it lands on the table. The result is a bright, even pool on the surface below, ideal for reading, writing, a place setting or a display of objects, with a soft glow at the rim of the shade. Three E26 sockets (23W maximum each) give generous output; warm-white LED bulbs keep the shade cool and the light comfortable. The lamp is not dimmable and switches from the cord.

Size and placement

At 20.9 in (53 cm) high with a 13.8 in (35 cm) dome, Cheshire needs a surface at least 16 in deep and wide to look settled: a console, a sideboard, a large desk or a generous nightstand. Because the light falls straight down, the most useful light lands within about 8 in of the base, so set it where you work or read rather than at the far end of a table. On a long sideboard, a pair placed about one-third in from each end gives balanced light. On a desk, place it to the side opposite your writing hand.

Care
