The FontanaArte Ashangai table lamp stands on five clear borosilicate glass tubes crossed like a game of pick-up sticks and pinned together with chrome-plated brass joints. Above that sparkling base, a wide white shade on a slim chrome stem spreads soft light across a sideboard, desk or hall table. At 30.3 in tall it is a substantial lamp for a long surface, and one that looks as considered unlit in daylight as it does glowing in the evening.

Light quality and how it performs

Ashangai uses three small E12 bulbs under one wide shade rather than a single large bulb, so the light spreads evenly across the full 18.5 in diameter and falls softly onto the surface below. The shade diffuses the glow upward and sideways at the same time, giving a warm ambient light to the room and a brighter pool on the table, which is ideal for a sideboard set for drinks or a desk used in the evening.

Light falling through the clear glass tubes catches on every edge and chrome joint, so the base glints even though it is not lit itself. A dimmer on the cord lets you take the three bulbs down for a softer, candle-like mood. Each socket takes up to 30W; three 2700K LED candelabra bulbs give a warm, even look.

Size and placement

At 30.3 in (77 cm) tall with an 18.5 in (47 cm) shade, Ashangai is a full-size lamp. It belongs on a sideboard, console or buffet at least 18 in deep, or on a large writing desk. The open glass base keeps it visually light, so it will not crowd a mirror or artwork hung behind it; the maker's own photograph shows it in front of a gilt mirror, where the reflection doubles the effect.

On a console, set the lamp toward one end and balance it with a group of ceramics or books. On a desk, place it to the side of your writing hand so the shade lights the work surface without casting your shadow.

Where it works

Living and dining rooms. A sideboard or buffet is the classic home for Ashangai, where it lights a bar tray or serving pieces and adds sparkle to the room.

Studies and entries. On a library desk or hall console it gives a strong focal point and useful light.

Hospitality. In hotel suites, boutique lobbies, private dining rooms and members' clubs, a 1955 design in glass and chrome signals heritage and craftsmanship. It plugs in, so it can be placed on reception desks and credenzas without wiring.

Style and pairing

Max Ingrand, the French glass master who was FontanaArte's art director in the 1950s, designed Ashangai in 1955. Its mix of glass, chrome and a calm white shade makes it a natural fit for Classic and Retro rooms with walnut, rosewood, brass and antique mirrors, while the transparent base keeps it light enough for Transitional and Contemporary interiors. Pair it with dark polished wood, smoked or clear glass objects and a plain wall so the crossed tubes read clearly.

Why choose Ashangai

  • A 1955 design by Max Ingrand, still produced by FontanaArte.
  • Crossed borosilicate glass tubes and chrome-plated brass make the base a sculpture in its own right.
  • Three bulbs under a wide shade for even, generous light.
  • Dimmer included on the cord.
  • Plug-in with a transparent cable that keeps the look clean.

Care

Unplug and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Wipe the glass tubes and chrome joints with a soft, lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner applied to the cloth. Dust the shade with a soft brush. Lift the lamp from the central stem, never by the glass tubes. Dry indoor use only.
