Handleless stoneware cups on a floating pedestal, in espresso, coffee and tea sizes and two matte glazes.
MAKOTO cups are designed by Carsten Gollnick and made in Portugal from stoneware with matte glazes in warm Nordic tones. True to their Japanese inspiration they have no handle, and a subtle base lifts each cup so it seems to float. Choose an espresso cup (1.9 fl oz), a coffee cup (7.3 fl oz) or a tea cup (9.5 fl oz), in Moonbeam or Elephant Skin. All are dishwasher and microwave safe.

The designer: Carsten Gollnick

Carsten Gollnick (born 1966) founded the German studio Carsten Gollnick Design in 1997. Japan has shaped his work from the start, including the Japanese principle he designs by: no object is more important than another, because even the smallest piece has a use and a meaning. His studio has designed more than 100 products and won the iF Design Award, the German Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award.
Why we carry it
We are an authorized blomus retailer and have been curating design-led pieces for the home since 2009. MAKOTO pairs clear geometry with a subtle base that makes each piece seem to float just above the table. Gollnick gave the two glazes deliberately different characters: Moonbeam looks like the landscape of the moon’s surface, while Elephant Skin is smooth and matte. blomus is a family company run by the fourth generation of the Blome family in Sundern, Germany. It began in 1921 making bicycle parts, moved into copper, brass, pewter and stainless-steel design pieces in 1961, and has worked under the blomus name since 2000.
Buy once: durability and care
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Our advice: let very hot drinks cool for a moment before lifting a handleless cup. Each piece is unique: small variations appear during firing and give every piece its character.
