Skyline Chess Tokyo Acrylic Chess Set with Tokyo Map Board

Architecture you can play: Tokyo in miniature, as a full 32-piece acrylic chess set.

The Skyline Chess Tokyo Edition turns Tokyo’s skyline into chess pieces. The pieces are Tokyo’s landmarks, including the Prada Aoyama building, Sompo Japan building, Gakuen Cocoon Tower, Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree.

Skyline Chess was founded by two London-based architectural designers who pit the world’s great buildings against each other. This set comes with a hand-printed Tokyo map board (15 x 15 inches) and a presentation box, ready to play or display.

Who this is not for

• Tournament players who need classic Staunton pieces: every piece is a building, so it takes a game or two to learn the line-up.
• Anyone short on space: the board is 15 inches square and the box 16 inches.
• Buyers who need an exact weight: the distributor doesn’t publish it for the acrylic sets.
• Anyone who needs to know the board material: the distributor’s listing describes it as both wood and marble.

Why we carry it

We’ve been curating design-led pieces since 2009, and Skyline Chess is the kind of object we look for: a real, playable chess set that also works as sculpture. We list it from the brand’s US distributor, with the distributor’s item number and barcode.

Buy once: durability and care

Our advice (the distributor doesn’t publish care instructions): dust the acrylic pieces with a soft, dry cloth; avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners, which can cloud acrylic. Keep the board out of direct sun and away from spills.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Skyline Chess Tokyo Edition board, and will it fit my coffee table?

The board is 15 x 15 inches and 0.35 inch thick. Allow a clear 16-inch square or more so captured pieces have somewhere to go. The box measures 16 x 16 x 2 inches.

Are the Skyline Chess Tokyo Edition pieces heavy enough to play with?

The acrylic pieces are double-weighted and have soft felt bases. The distributor doesn’t publish the set’s weight; expect it to be far lighter than the stainless steel editions.

Does the Skyline Chess Tokyo Edition come with a board and a box?

How should I clean the Skyline Chess Tokyo Edition?

Our advice (the distributor doesn’t publish care instructions): dust the acrylic pieces with a soft, dry cloth; avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners, which can cloud acrylic. Keep the board out of direct sun and away from spills.
