Skyline Chess Chicago Stainless Steel Chess Set with Carrara Marble Board

Architecture you can play: Chicago in miniature, as a full 32-piece stainless steel chess set.

The Skyline Chess Chicago Edition turns Chicago’s skyline into chess pieces. The pieces are Chicago’s landmarks, including Marina City, the Crain Communications Building, Two Prudential Plaza, the John Hancock Center and Willis Tower.

Skyline Chess was founded by two London-based architectural designers who pit the world’s great buildings against each other. This set comes with a hand screen-printed Italian Carrara marble board (15 x 15 inches) and a luxury black gift box, ready to play or display.

Who this is not for

• Tournament players who need classic Staunton pieces: every piece is a building, so it takes a game or two to learn the line-up.
• Anyone short on space: the board is 15 inches square and the box 16 inches.

Why we carry it

We’ve been curating design-led pieces since 2009, and Skyline Chess is the kind of object we look for: a real, playable chess set that also works as sculpture. We list it from the brand’s US distributor, with the distributor’s item number and barcode.

Buy once: durability and care

Our advice (the distributor doesn’t publish care instructions): wipe the steel pieces with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, keep them dry and store them in the box. Avoid abrasive pads. Wipe up spills on the marble board quickly, especially anything acidic.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Skyline Chess Chicago Edition board, and will it fit my coffee table?

The board is 15 x 15 inches and 0.35 inch thick. Allow a clear 16-inch square or more so captured pieces have somewhere to go. The box measures 16 x 16 x 2 inches.

Are the Skyline Chess Chicago Edition pieces heavy enough to play with?

Yes. The pieces are hand-cast in solid stainless steel and the distributor lists the set at 16 lb, so they sit firmly on the board. Soft felt bases protect the surface.

Does the Skyline Chess Chicago Edition come with a board and a box?
