Leave about 16–18" between the sofa seat and the table edge and 30–36" for walkways, and choose a table about two-thirds the length of your sofa (our guide). This one: at 59.3" it suits a sofa about 83–95" long. An oval top gives a long sofa the length it needs with softer corners for tight walkways (our guide).

Who this is not for

• Loveseats and small apartments: at 59.3" it is sized for a sofa about 83" long or more (our guide: a coffee table about two-thirds of the sofa length).
• Heavy loads: TOV rates the top for up to 285 lb.
• Anyone who needs it within days: it is currently on pre-order.
• Anyone who wants to leave it uncovered in all weather: TOV recommends covering it during bad weather or when not in use.
