A hardwired pendant that works over a kitchen island and out on a covered patio: damp-rated, dimmable, with a replaceable bulb you can buy anywhere.

We curate lighting that has to work in more than one place, and the Swell Medium is one of the easier calls. Its 12 in shade sits in proportion over an island, a dining table, an entry or a covered terrace, and the same fixture can repeat across indoor and outdoor rooms so a project reads as one scheme. Dimming runs through a standard TRIAC or ELV dimmer.

Best for / where to use it

• Kitchen islands: two or three in a row, each about a shade-width apart, give even task light without a long fixture.
• Dining rooms and breakfast nooks: a single pendant over a small round table, or a trio over a longer one.
• Entries and stair landings: a lone Medium reads as a deliberate accent where a chandelier would crowd.
• Covered patios and porches: the damp rating allows a roofed outdoor ceiling.
• Hospitality and retail: a repeatable fixture for bar fronts, host stands and restaurant booths.

Installation & planning

• Hardwired: plan on a licensed electrician and a standard ceiling junction box.
• Cable adjusts up to 10 ft (305 cm), so measure your drop before cutting; over a counter, leave the bottom of the shade roughly 30 to 36 in above the surface.
• Use a TRIAC or ELV dimmer on the circuit; confirm DALI with us before specifying it.
• Outdoors, install only under a roof or soffit. Damp rating is not a wet rating.
• The 4.8 in canopy is small, so ceiling spacing is set by the 12 in shades, not the hardware.

Who this is not for

• Open-air spots exposed to rain, where a wet-rated fixture is required.
• Anyone who wants light that warms as it dims: the color temperature is fixed at 3000K.
• Plug-in installs: there is no cord and plug option.
• Very large rooms where a single 12 in shade will look undersized; consider the Wide or an XL string instead.

Frequently asked questions

How low should I hang a Swell Medium over a kitchen island?

As a starting point, set the bottom of the 12 in shade about 30 to 36 in above the counter so it clears sight lines. The cable adjusts up to 10 ft (305 cm), so you can trim the drop on site once the fixtures are up.

How many do I need for a 7 ft island?

Three Swell Mediums, spaced a little more than one shade-width (12 in) apart and centered on the island, is the usual layout. Two work for a 4 to 5 ft island.

Will it work with the dimmer already on my wall?

Pablo lists TRIAC/ELV compatibility, which covers most standard LED dimmers. DALI control is available on request. If you are unsure, send us your dimmer model and we will check it.

What bulb does it take, and can I replace it?

It ships with a Satco 11 W E26 PAR30 LED (1000 lm). The lamp is replaceable, so a standard E26 PAR30 LED of the same size can go in later.

How do I clean the brass interior?

Switch the power off and let the shade cool. Wipe the inside with a barely damp microfiber cloth and dry it, and dust the aluminum outside with a soft dry cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and polishes.
