Pablo Piccola Table Lamp with Bendable Leather Base and Tilting Shade, Dimmable Halogen

A small plug-in table lamp you can reshape: bend the leather base, tilt the shade 90 degrees, and dim the warm halogen light.

We keep the Piccola on the list for anyone who wants a lamp with a sense of play. The base is a hand-stitched leather jacket filled with recycled steel pellets, so it flexes and holds the pose you give it, and a spun aluminum shade on a machined post tilts to aim the light. It uses a halogen lamp rather than an LED, which gives a warm 2900K glow at 380 lumens, and an in-line rotary dimmer on the 8 ft cord controls it. The design received an I.D. Magazine Gold Award in 1993 and sits in the permanent collection of SFMOMA.

Best for / where to use it

• Nightstands: a small, dimmable lamp whose shade you can tilt away from a sleeper.
• Desks and reading nooks: bend the base and tilt the shade toward the page.
• Bookshelves and consoles: a sculptural accent in one of six colors.
• Collectors' homes and design-minded offices: a lamp with museum provenance.
• Kids' and teens' rooms: playful, compact and easy to adjust.

Installation & planning

• Plug-in only; the 8 ft (244 cm) cord has an in-line rotary dimmer.
• The source is a Satco 15.5 W halogen lamp with a GY6.35 bi-pin base, so replacement lamps must match that type.
• Halogen lamps run hot; leave space around the shade and keep fabrics and papers clear.
• Bend the leather base to set the angle, then tilt the shade up to 90 degrees to aim the light.
• Keep it in dry, indoor locations.

Who this is not for

• Anyone who wants an LED source: the Piccola uses a halogen lamp.
• People who need strong reading light; the output is 380 lm.
• Anyone who wants a very cool or adjustable color temperature: it is a fixed 2900K halogen.
• Damp or wet locations.
