Essentials 588x 1 to 2-Light Flush Mount, 6 to 9 in, 4 Finishes, by Maxim

The Maxim Essentials 588x flush mount is a mid-century modern fixture sized for a hallway, a bedroom, a closet, a kitchen or a laundry room. It comes in widths from 6 to 9 in, with 1 to 2 lights, in White, Black, Oil Rubbed Bronze or Satin Nickel.

Each socket takes an E26 Medium bulb up to 60W. A 2700K to 3000K LED bulb keeps a bedroom or hallway warm; 3500K to 4000K suits a kitchen, laundry room or closet. Choose White, Black, Oil Rubbed Bronze or Satin Nickel to match hardware, faucets or cabinet pulls in the room; it suits Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary and Transitional schemes.

Where it works best

A flush mount sits tight to the ceiling, so it suits ceilings of 8 ft and lower, where a hanging fixture would cut into headroom. For a room, add its length and width in feet; the total in inches is a good diameter (a 10 x 12 ft bedroom takes about a 22 in fixture). A hallway or closet usually needs 11 to 14 in; in a long hallway, space fixtures about 8 to 10 ft apart.

Who this is not for

It is damp rated, so a covered porch or bathroom is fine, but not a spot exposed to rain. Bulbs are sold separately.

Why we carry Maxim

Maxim matches its finishes across collections, so a chandelier, its pendants and its sconces read as one scheme. That is how we build a room around one fixture.

Care and installation

Dust with a soft, dry cloth; clean glass with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner, with the power off. A qualified electrician should make the connection. Assembly sheets: 5889 (PDF), 5880 (PDF), 5884 (PDF), 5881 (PDF), 5885 (PDF).

Frequently asked questions

What size room is the Essentials 588x flush mount right for?

The 6 in size suits a room of about 3 x 2 ft, a hallway or a closet; the 9 in size suits a room of about 4 x 4 ft.

Will it work with a low ceiling?

Yes. It is 7 in (17.8 cm) tall at most, so on an 8 ft ceiling it leaves about 89 in of clearance below.

Does it need special bulbs, and can it dim?

It takes E26 Medium bulbs up to 60W, sold separately.

Can I use it in a bathroom or on a porch?

Yes, in a bathroom away from direct spray or on a covered porch. It is damp rated.
