The FontanaArte Regina table lamp is a wide, low lamp of satin-blown opal glass shaped like the queen of a chessboard: a broad circular crown, a stepped body and a small orb on top. It glows evenly from every surface, so it lights a desk, a sideboard or a hall table with a soft, warm presence and reads as sculpture when it is off. At 19.2 in across and 17.7 in tall, it is generous enough to anchor a room on its own, and it can also be paired with its partner, the tall Re lamp, as the king and queen of a space.

Light quality and how it performs

Regina is lit from within: the whole stacked glass body glows, from the wide crown down to the base, in a warm 2700K white. The satin finish blurs the light source completely, so there is no hot spot and no glare from any angle, just an even, milky luminance. The broad crown also casts light down onto the surface around the lamp, which makes it a pleasant companion on a desk or sideboard in the evening.

A dimmer on the cord takes Regina from a full, room-filling glow to a low, candle-like level. That range makes it equally at home as the main lamp in a study or as a soft accent in a dining room.

Size and placement

With a 19.2 in (49 cm) diameter and 17.7 in (45 cm) height, Regina is wider than it is tall. Give it a surface at least 20 in deep, such as a desk, a sideboard, a console or a large side table. It also stands comfortably on the floor in a corner or beside an armchair, where its glow sits at seat level.

Bobo Piccoli designed Regina as a pair with Re, the tall king. Placed side by side, or at opposite ends of a room, the two lamps answer each other; Regina also works perfectly well alone.

Where it works

Studies and home offices. On a writing desk it gives soft ambient light and a strong design focus, as the maker shows in a bright study.

Living and dining rooms. On a sideboard or console, Regina adds warmth and sculpture; pair it with Re for a dramatic composition.

Hotels, lobbies and lounges. In historic palazzi and contemporary lobbies alike, its 1968 silhouette signals design pedigree. It plugs in, so it can be placed on reception desks and lounge tables without wiring.

Style and pairing

Regina dates from 1968 and has the playful geometry of late-1960s Italian design, which makes it a natural Retro piece that also looks Contemporary today. It is equally striking in a frescoed Classic salon, against a deep red wall or in a white Modern study. Pair it with walnut, velvet, travertine and bold colour, or with pale plaster and oak for a calmer effect.

Why choose Regina

  • A 1968 design icon by Bobo Piccoli, made by FontanaArte.
  • Glows evenly through satin opal glass with no glare.
  • Dimmable warm 2700K light.
  • Works on a table or on the floor.
  • Pairs with the Re lamp as king and queen.

Care

Unplug before cleaning. Wipe the glass with a soft cloth, slightly damp if needed, and dry it. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents that could mark the satin finish. Move the lamp by its base with two hands. Dry indoor locations only.
