SABLO serving bowls by Frederike Martens bring the collection’s two textures to the center of the table. The two salad bowls are wide and shallow, 13.4" and 11.2" across and 3" deep, so a salad can be tossed and served without crowding. The 7.9" serving bowl is deeper at 3.7" for vegetables, potatoes or rice. Colors depend on size: Cloud in all three, Stone and Savannah in selected sizes.

The designer: Frederike Martens

Frederike Martens (born 1987) studied industrial design at the design school in Halle, Germany, specializing in glass and ceramics. She favors pure, simple shapes and colors that don’t date, and she cares as much about how a piece works day to day as how it looks. SABLO, a tableware family of 18 pieces, was her first design for blomus; her CEOLA vases followed.

Why we carry it

We are an authorized blomus retailer and have been curating design-led pieces for the home since 2009. SABLO is stoneware made from colored clay blended with quartz, minerals and oxides and fired at a very high temperature. The firing makes the body dense enough to go without an all-over glaze, so every piece is glazed only in part; the rest is left as raw, lightly speckled clay with a fine, sandy feel. Cloud is a soft off-white with a hint of gray, Stone a pale gray with a cool blue cast, and Savannah a warm, deep yellow; on every color the bare band is a sandy beige. blomus is a family company run by the fourth generation of the Blome family in Sundern, Germany. It began in 1921 making bicycle parts, moved into copper, brass, pewter and stainless-steel design pieces in 1961, and has worked under the blomus name since 2000.

Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Our advice: the 13.4" bowl is wide, so check your dishwasher rack or wash it by hand. Glaze and clay react to the kiln, so color and texture vary slightly from one piece to the next.
