The designer: Nina Thöming, Flöz Design

Nina Thöming (born 1984) is an industrial designer with Flöz Design, a German studio and long-standing blomus partner. Her process is thorough and systematic: she begins by researching what people need and what the market lacks, then turns those findings into objects that are useful first and good-looking as a result. Besides the PILAR table line, her work for blomus includes the SONO bathroom series.

Why we carry it

We are an authorized blomus retailer and have been curating design-led pieces for the home since 2009. PILAR is cast stoneware made from clay, quartz and minerals such as calcite, then fired at very high temperatures. The firing leaves it sturdier than ordinary clay and more opaque than porcelain. Every piece is matte on the outside and glazed where food and drink touch it, which gives the two-tone look and makes it easy to clean. Moonbeam is a soft beige, Agave Green a dark, muted green, Mirage Grey a light gray with green undertones, and Pewter a charcoal. blomus is a family company run by the fourth generation of the Blome family in Sundern, Germany. It began in 1921 making bicycle parts, moved into copper, brass, pewter and stainless-steel design pieces in 1961, and has worked under the blomus name since 2000.
