The designer: Frederike Martens

Frederike Martens (born 1987) studied industrial design at the design school in Halle, Germany, where she specialized in glass and ceramics. She favors pure, simple forms and colors that don’t date, and she weighs how a piece works in daily use as heavily as how it looks. For blomus she has also designed the SABLO tableware and the CEOLA vases.

Why we carry it

We are an authorized blomus retailer and have been curating design-led pieces for the home since 2009. Every BELO piece is mouth-blown by experienced glassmakers, and the rim is cut and polished. Hand work brings small flow lines, the occasional tiny bubble and slight differences in wall thickness, and in the tinted versions the color varies gently from glass to glass. Clear is fully transparent; Smoke is a smoky gray and Coffee a warm brown, with the stem and foot of the stemmed glasses left clear. blomus is a family company run by the fourth generation of the Blome family in Sundern, Germany. It began in 1921 making bicycle parts, moved into copper, brass, pewter and stainless-steel design pieces in 1961, and has worked under the blomus name since 2000.

Buy once: durability and care

Dishwasher safe, according to blomus. Our advice: give handmade glass room on the top rack or wash it by hand, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Because each piece is blown by hand, small flow lines, tiny bubbles and slight variations in thickness and tint are normal.
