Mono 4 is the small pendant you reach for when a space needs several lights in a row without visual clutter: over a kitchen island or breakfast bar, along a cafe or retail counter, beside a bed in place of a table lamp, or in a tight entry or hallway. The closed metal drum is just 4.35 inches across and 7 inches tall, so a line of three or five reads as a neat set of columns. It suits Modern, Industrial and Scandinavian interiors and commercial fit-outs alike.

No bulb is visible. A frosted acrylic disc closes the bottom of the drum, so whatever lamp you fit becomes a calm circle of light aimed down at the counter, with the glare kept inside the shade. The medium E26 socket takes an LED A19, R20 or PAR20 lamp up to 14 W, so you can choose a warmer or brighter bulb to suit the task. Choose Matte Black for a graphic line or White to blend into a pale ceiling.

About Blackjack Lighting and Stephen Blackman

Blackjack Lighting is a design- and technology-driven lighting maker based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, outside Chicago. It is led by industrial designer Stephen Blackman, its President and Chief Design Officer. A Syracuse University industrial design graduate, he entered the lighting industry in 1984 at Sonneman Design Group and founded his own studio, Blackman Design Associates, in 1988, designing for manufacturers such as Kichler Lighting before launching Blackjack in 2013. His focus has always been practical, and Mono 4 shows it at the smallest scale: a plain drum, a frosted base and a bulb you choose.

How many do I need over an island?

As a rule of thumb, one every 18 to 24 inches along the counter, keeping about 6 inches from each end. Three suit most islands; five work on longer ones.

What height should they hang?

About 30 to 36 inches between the counter and the bottom of the drum. The overall height adjusts from 8 to 103 inches.

Which bulb should I use?

An E26 LED lamp up to 14 W. An A19 gives a broader glow through the diffuser; an R20 or PAR20 reflector lamp throws a brighter pool onto the counter. The bulb is not included.

Can I put it on a dimmer?
