Compass is a single, slim ring of light that lets a room read clean and open. A 1.25-inch aluminum profile with a glowing silicone diffuser floats on three fine cables, so it fills the space above a table without blocking the view across it. The 24-inch ring centers a round dining table, a breakfast nook or an entry; the 36-inch ring takes on a larger dining table, a living room, a conference table or a reception area. In Matte Black or White it fits Modern, Scandinavian and Transitional interiors, and it is just as comfortable in offices, hotel lobbies and restaurants as in a home. About Blackjack Lighting and Stephen Blackman

Blackjack Lighting is a design- and technology-driven lighting maker based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, outside Chicago. It is led by industrial designer Stephen Blackman, its President and Chief Design Officer. A Syracuse University industrial design graduate, he entered the lighting industry in 1984 at Sonneman Design Group and founded his own studio, Blackman Design Associates, in 1988, designing for manufacturers such as Kichler Lighting before launching Blackjack in 2013. Which size do I need?

As a rule, choose a ring about half to two-thirds the width of the table below it. The 24 in ring suits round tables up to about 48 in and smaller rooms; the 36 in ring suits 6 to 8 ft tables and rooms over about 14 ft across.

How high should it hang?

Over a table, leave 30 to 36 in between the tabletop and the ring. In a walkway, keep at least 7 ft of headroom. The three cables adjust on site from 9 in to 99 in of drop.

Can it go on a sloped or high ceiling?

Yes. The cables hang plumb from the canopy, and the 8 ft cables cover most tall ceilings. The canopy mounts to a standard junction box rated for the fixture weight.

Will it work with my dimmer?

The built-in driver supports TRIAC (incandescent-style), ELV and 0-10V dimming on 120-277V, so it works with most residential dimmers and commercial 0-10V systems. Use the 4-wire instructions for 0-10V wiring.

Which color temperature should I pick?

2700K or 3000K for homes, restaurants and hotels; 3500K or 4000K for offices, conference rooms and retail where a crisper white is wanted.
