Mammalampa The Queen Gold Leaf & Rust Steel Pendant, Small 7.9 in

A 7.9-inch dome of rusted steel lined with real 23.75-carat gold leaf: a tiny pendant with the presence of a jewel.

The small Queen is a 7.9"-wide, 3.9"-high half-sphere: patinated steel outside, hand-applied 23.75-carat gold leaf by Manetti inside, so the light bounces off the gold and falls in a warm, glowing pool. It hangs from a gold-colored steel suspension with a brown textile-lined cord (up to 80") and a corroded steel canopy, and takes one E12 candelabra LED bulb up to 30W. Because the rust forms naturally, no two Queens look exactly alike.

About the designer

Ieva Kalēja is Mammalampa’s founder and designer. She starts from the material rather than a preconceived object and describes her approach as intuitive and feminine, sensitive to texture, atmosphere and emotion. Latvian design magazine FOLD reports that Elle Decor named her one of the world’s ten most talented women designers in 2020, and that she chairs the product-design jury of the National Design Award of Latvia in 2026. In 2024 she curated the “Summer” exhibition of design processes at Riga’s Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

Why we carry it

We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and The Queen is one of the most striking material contrasts we know in lighting, and the small size makes it accessible for clusters and smaller rooms. Mammalampa is a family company in Riga, Latvia. Designer Ieva Kalēja started it with her sister after returning from her studies in Milan, and their father became the studio’s technical expert. The name joins “mamma” (origin, care, the human touch) and “lampa” (light), and every lamp is made by hand in Latvia from natural materials such as paper, stone, steel, canvas and crystal, with as little machine work as possible. According to Mammalampa, its lamps have been installed in projects such as Tom Aikens’s Tom’s Kitchen restaurants in London, Marie Burgos Design interiors in Manhattan, the Story27 offices in Los Angeles and the Dome Hotel in Riga.

Buy once: durability and care

Dust the rusted exterior with a soft, dry brush or cloth; the patina is part of the design, so never polish, oil or wet it, and keep it indoors in a dry room. Do not touch or wipe the gold-leaf interior: leaf is extremely thin, and a soft blower brush is all it needs (our advice). Have a licensed electrician install it. Mammalampa lamps carry a 3-year warranty.
