Iris Wooden Pendant Light by MacMaster

A large wooden pendant that turns the light over a dining table or stairwell into the room's centrepiece.

The MacMaster Iris Wooden Pendant Light hangs a ring of curved timber leaves around a single E26 bulb. Light falls through the gaps between the leaves and glows off their inner faces, giving a warm, diffused ambient light with soft shadows on the ceiling. It is wired for 120 V and hangs from a brushed stainless steel canopy on a 39.4 in fabric cord.

Two sizes cover most rooms: the Small is 21.7 in across for dining tables and bedrooms, and the Large, at 29.5 in, fills double-height entries, stairwells and open-plan living spaces. Oak suits Scandinavian and Nordic schemes; walnut warms a Transitional or Mid-century room.

Where to use it

• Over a dining table: the Small over a table for four to six, the Large over a longer table.
• Stairwell or double-height hall: the Large gives a tall space a focal point you see from every level.
• Living room: as the main ambient light in place of a plain ceiling fixture.
• Restaurants and hotel lobbies: a handmade statement that reads well from across the room.

Planning notes

• Hang the bottom of the pendant about 30 to 34 in above a dining table top.
• The cord is 39.4 in; tell your electrician the drop you need before installation.
• Use a warm LED bulb of up to 20 W (not included).
• Have a qualified electrician install it.

Who this is not for

• Kitchens or offices that need bright, directional task light.
• Low ceilings where a 17.7 in tall Large would sit at head height.
• Bathrooms, outdoor or damp areas.

Care

Dust the timber with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush. Keep water, spray polish and cleaning sprays off the veneer, and switch off and let the bulb cool before changing it. A warm-white LED keeps heat low and shows the grain at its best.

Designed and made by Alex MacMaster, who founded MacMaster Design in 2009 and runs the workshop at The Guildings in Trimpley, near Bewdley, Worcestershire. Which size Iris pendant should I choose for my dining table?

The Small (21.7 in wide, 13.8 in tall) suits tables up to about 60 in long; the Large (29.5 in wide, 17.7 in tall) suits longer tables and open-plan spaces. As a rule, choose a pendant about half to two-thirds the width of the table.

Does the Iris wooden pendant give enough light for a dining room?

It gives warm, diffused ambient light that is ideal for dining and entertaining. If you also need bright light for homework or crafts, add recessed lights or wall lights on a separate switch.

What bulb and wiring does the Iris pendant use?
