Sean Lavin’s Bowman 12: a 12.6-inch die-cast aluminum outdoor pendant, wet listed to IP65, with 1,320 lumens of 3000K light from an integrated LED and a universal 120–277V driver.

Bowman is Sean Lavin’s take on the classic barn pendant for Visual Comfort & Co.’s Modern Collection: a conical shade cast in aluminum, sealed to IP65, with an acrylic diffuser underneath that softens the LED into an even pool of downlight. The Bowman 12 is the 12.6-inch size, finished in Charcoal powder coat with stainless steel hardware.

It hangs on rigid stems rather than a cord, so it stays still in a breeze, and a ball joint at the canopy lets it hang plumb from ceilings sloped up to 45 degrees. The three included stems set the overall height anywhere from 13 to 34 inches.

Best for

Covered and open porches, pergolas over an outdoor dining table, exterior entries, pool houses and commercial canopies. Over a table, hang the shade 30–36 inches above the top; in a walkway keep 7 feet of clearance (our advice).

Installation & sizing

Visual Comfort’s stem system worked out for a covered porch or pergola:

• Overall height: 13" to 34" from the ceiling, using the 3", 6" and 12" stems
• Over an outdoor table: bottom of the shade 30–36" above the tabletop
• Walk-through porch: keep at least 7 ft of clearance under the shade
• Sloped ceiling: the ball joint takes slopes up to 45°
• Spacing in a row: about 4–6 ft apart along a long porch

Rigid stems only, no cord: it is meant for outdoor use where a swaying cord would be a problem, and Visual Comfort warns against hanging it in areas with high winds. Have a licensed electrician mount it to a wet-location ceiling box.

Bowman is cast, sealed and wet listed, dims on three kinds of controls, runs on any voltage from 120 to 277 and still looks like a piece of design. Buy once: durability and care

The LED module is built in and field-serviceable, rated for more than 60,000 hours to L70. Rinse the shade with clean water and wipe it with a soft cloth; avoid pressure washers and abrasive cleaners on the powder coat and the acrylic diffuser (our advice). Installation is hardwired to a wet-location ceiling box by a licensed electrician.
