A noren is the traditional Japanese fabric divider hung between rooms, in doorways, on walls or in windows, usually with vertical slits cut from the bottom almost to the top so people can pass through or glance past. Yumi Ishikita of Noboriya makes these by katazome, the Japanese art of hand-dyeing cloth through a stencil, on natural hemp with natural dyes. Each measures 59 × 35 in. Choose from five of her designs: Banana Leaf Blue, Chigaimaru-Nami with its offset circles, the yellow-dotted Mimoza-Nami, and Nami-Nami waves in blue or in brown. Hung in a doorway it softens the view and the light; on a wall it reads as a piece of textile art.
