The Bauhaus desk lamp itself: Curt Fischer’s TYP 113, handmade again in Germany on the original 1920s tooling, in a numbered edition of 100.
Curt Fischer designed the TYP 113 around 1923, and three years later it was lighting the workshops and studios of the new Bauhaus in Dessau. This edition is made the slow way: 100% by hand in Germany with the original 1920s tooling, its stem of polished nickel-plated steel hand formed by the furniture maker Thonet, its shade spun from aluminum and enameled black. The bias-cut shade rotates, and the arm articulates so you can put light exactly on the work surface. The ceramic bulb housing and the Bakelite on/off switch on the shade are genuine new old stock found in the original factory. The lamp clamps to tabletops 0.8″ to 2.0″ thick and each one is numbered 1 to 100.

Why we carry it
We’ve been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and few lamps carry as much design history as Midgard’s. Midgard was founded in 1919 by the engineer Curt Fischer, who received the world’s first patent for adjustable electric lighting. In 1926, when the Bauhaus moved into its new buildings in Dessau, Midgard lamps chosen by Walter Gropius went into the workshops, studios and Masters’ Houses. Its heritage designs are still made in Germany with original tools and long-standing suppliers.
Buy once: durability and care
Midgard lamps are built from steel, aluminum and Bakelite to last for decades. Switch off and let the shade cool, then dust with a soft, dry cloth. Enamel and powder coat can take a slightly damp cloth with a drop of mild soap; avoid abrasives and solvents, and keep moisture away from the socket and switch.
Frequently asked questions
How thick a desk can the TYP 113 clamp onto?
Tabletops from 0.8″ to 2.0″ thick.
What bulb does the Midgard TYP 113 take?
One E27 bulb, maximum 60 W. In the US an E26 LED fits the E27 thread; a warm-white LED of 6–10 W keeps the shade cool (our advice).
Is the TYP 113 a limited edition?
Yes. Each lamp is numbered from 1 to 100 and made entirely by hand in Germany on the original 1920s tooling.
What is the TYP 113 made of?
A spun aluminum shade enameled black, a polished nickel-plated steel stem hand formed by Thonet, a ceramic bulb housing and a Bakelite switch, both new old stock.
How tall is the Midgard TYP 113?
It measures 9.84″ L × 7.87″ W × 31.5″ H and weighs 5 lb, with a 60″ fabric-covered cord.
Which interiors suit the TYP 113? (our styling advice)
Studios, libraries and home offices with an industrial, Bauhaus, mid-century or minimalist feel; it is just as striking on a plain oak desk.
