The Maxim Lateral bath vanity light is a transitional fixture for a bathroom vanity, a powder room or a dressing area. It comes in widths from 12 to 36 in, with 2 to 5 lights, in Black, Satin Nickel or Satin Brass.

Each socket takes an E26 Medium bulb up to 60W. A 3000K to 3500K LED bulb with a CRI of 90 or more shows skin tones accurately for shaving and makeup. It mounts with the shades up or down: down puts more light on the counter and sink, up spreads a softer light across the ceiling. Choose Black, Satin Nickel or Satin Brass to match the faucets, towel bars or cabinet pulls; it suits Transitional schemes.

Where it works best

Choose a vanity light about three quarters the width of the mirror and never wider than it. Set it about 6 ft 3 in to 6 ft 8 in up, which usually lands 3 to 4 in over the mirror frame. Over a double vanity, center one light over each sink or run one long fixture across both mirrors. For the most even light on the face, add a sconce on each side of the mirror at about eye level.

Who this is not for

The 36 in size is meant for a long or double-vanity mirror; on a single mirror, choose a size no wider than the glass. It is damp rated for bathrooms, but not for inside a shower enclosure. Bulbs are sold separately.

What height should a vanity light go?

About 6 ft 3 in to 6 ft 8 in (190 to 203 cm) up, or 3 to 4 in over the mirror frame, so it lights the face without glare.

Can it mount with the shades up or down?
