Besa Ciro opal glass vanity light beside a bathroom mirror

How High Should Bathroom Vanity Lights Be?

✓ Short answer: Mount sconces on each side of the mirror with their centers about 60 to 66 inches off the floor; they give the most even, flattering light. If the wall only takes one fixture, center a vanity bar above the mirror at about 78 to 84 inches (rules of thumb).

7 rules of thumb for vanity lighting

  1. Light the face from both sides. Side light fills the shadows that an overhead fixture casts under the eyes and chin.
  2. Side sconces: 60 to 66 in. high. Per Golden Lighting, measure to the center of the light, not the top of the backplate.
  3. Keep them close to the mirror. Set each sconce 2 to 6 in. from the mirror edge, typically 28 to 34 in. apart center to center on a standard vanity.
  4. One fixture above: 78 to 84 in. For a bar over the mirror, leave at least 6 in. to the ceiling. Seated vanities sit lower, about 52 to 66 in.
  5. Long vanity? Add a third light. Over 72 in. of counter, add a centered fixture or choose a 3-light bar so both sinks get even light.
  6. Warm, true color. Choose 2700K to 3000K with CRI 90 or higher, so makeup and skin tones look the way they will outdoors.
  7. Check the rating. Near a tub or shower you need at least a damp rating, and corded or pendant fixtures are not allowed within 3 ft horizontally and 8 ft vertically of the tub rim (NEC 410.10(D)). Ask a licensed electrician to install.

Frequently asked questions

Is overhead lighting enough for a bathroom vanity?

Usually not on its own. Light from above casts shadows under the eyes and chin, so pair it with sconces or a bar at the mirror.

How far apart should vanity sconces be?

As a rule of thumb, 2 to 6 in. from the mirror edge, roughly 28 to 34 in. center to center on a typical single vanity.

What color temperature is best for vanity lighting?

Warm to neutral white, 2700K to 3000K, with a CRI of 90 or higher for true skin tones.

Do bathroom light fixtures need to be damp rated?

Fixtures near a tub or shower need at least a damp rating, and a wet rating where spray can reach them. Our Besa picks are rated for damp interior spaces.

Can I use sconces and a vanity bar together?

Yes. On a vanity longer than about 72 in., a centered bar or third light keeps both sinks evenly lit.
