The Bride is Mammalampa’s signature design: a generous shade braided by hand from semi-parchment paper, so the light passes through the weave and fills the room with a diffused, airy glow. The medium size, 23.6" across and 15.8" high, is the one we suggest most often. It is large enough to anchor a dining table or a bedroom and light enough, at 3.5 lb, to hang from almost any ceiling. It takes one E26 LED bulb up to 50W, hangs on up to 80" of textile-lined cord from a white steel canopy, is UL listed, and dims with a dimmable LED bulb. Choose from six colors: White, Brown, Graphite, Pink, Turquoise or Mint.

About the designer

Ieva Kalēja is Mammalampa’s founder and designer. She starts from the material rather than a preconceived object and describes her approach as intuitive and feminine, sensitive to texture, atmosphere and emotion. Latvian design magazine FOLD reports that Elle Decor named her one of the world’s ten most talented women designers in 2020, and that she chairs the product-design jury of the National Design Award of Latvia in 2026. In 2024 she curated the “Summer” exhibition of design processes at Riga’s Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

Why we carry it

We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and The Bride is exactly the kind of piece we look for: an everyday material, paper, turned by hand into something that could never be mistaken for mass production. Mammalampa is a family company in Riga, Latvia. Designer Ieva Kalēja started it with her sister after returning from her studies in Milan, and their father became the studio’s technical expert. The name joins “mamma” (origin, care, the human touch) and “lampa” (light), and every lamp is made by hand in Latvia from natural materials such as paper, stone, steel, canvas and crystal, with as little machine work as possible. According to Mammalampa, its lamps have been installed in projects such as Tom Aikens’s Tom’s Kitchen restaurants in London, Marie Burgos Design interiors in Manhattan, the Story27 offices in Los Angeles and the Dome Hotel in Riga.

Buy once: durability and care

The Bride’s shade is hand-braided semi-parchment paper. Mammalampa recommends dusting it with a soft brush, or a vacuum with a very soft brush attachment on low power; never use water, liquid cleaners or abrasives on the paper. A warm 2700K LED bulb shows the texture of the paper at its best (our advice). Have a licensed electrician install it. Mammalampa lamps carry a 3-year warranty.
