The Bau 50 Linear Suspension by Sean Lavin for Visual Comfort Modern is the Bauhaus aesthetic applied at dining-table scale — a 49.2-inch linear fixture composed of two precision-stamped metal plates that graze each other along their length, integrated LEDs housed between them producing an upward-grazing indirect glow that flatters the fixture's own geometry as much as it illuminates the room. It is a lighting object designed to read as a floating architectural element above the dining surface: long, thin, deliberate, and utterly resolved in its geometry.
The Bau 50 delivers 58.3W across its integrated LED modules, producing 1,211 lumens at 3000K from a light source calibrated for intimate ambient illumination rather than high-output task lighting. Two sets of (2) × 6" and (4) × 12" rigid stems provide height adjustment, and the fixture is compatible with sloped ceilings. Due to its substantial weight, the ceiling junction box must be rated for a minimum of 150 lbs. Dimmable with ELV and TRIAC dimmers on 120V–277V. Damp rated, ETL listed, Title 24 compliant. Available in Nightshade Black and Natural Brass.
Why It Works in Your Space
The Bau 50 is proportioned to hang above dining tables 60–84 inches long — the VC recommendation is to select a linear fixture no more than two-thirds the length of the table, making it ideal for a 72–84" table. Its indirect LED output means the fixture glows against the plates rather than projecting a hard cone downward, producing a warm, diffused light that flatters the dining experience without hot spots or glare. The grazing effect on the metal plates creates a visual dimension to the fixture when illuminated — it is as interesting to look at as it is functional. Pair with a Bau 18 or Bau 28 pendant over a parallel island for a fully coordinated Bau kitchen and dining scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What dining table length suits the Bau 50?
A: As a rule of thumb, a linear pendant should be no more than two-thirds the length of the table below it. The Bau 50 (49.2") is ideally proportioned for dining tables 72–84 inches long.
Q: Why does it require a 150-lb junction box?
A: The Bau 50 is a substantial fixture due to its metal plate construction and length. Always verify your ceiling junction box is rated for the fixture's weight before installation.
Q: How does the Bau 50 produce indirect light?
A: The integrated LEDs are housed between the two stamped metal plates and shine outward along the plate edges, creating a grazing effect on the metal surfaces. This produces soft, warm indirect light rather than a direct downward beam.
Q: Can it be used with a Bau pendant in the same space?
A: Yes — the Bau family is designed for coordinated installation. A Bau 50 over a dining table paired with a Bau 18 over a kitchen island creates a fully cohesive Bauhaus-inspired lighting scheme in a connected open-plan space.
