Lit, it throws a warm, patterned glow onto the surrounding wall; unlit, it reads as a piece of wall art. It comes in two diameters, 15.75" and 23.6", in natural birch, mounted on a compact 5" wooden backplate and built by hand in Copenhagen.

Specifications

Brand: Tom Rossau (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Model: TR5 Wall Light

Designer: Tom Rossau, 2005

Type: Sculptural wall light: a ring of twisted birch strips around one bulb

Colors: Natural Birch

Sizes: 15.75" diameter × 7.1" deep (40 × 18 cm); 23.6" × 7.9" (60 × 20 cm)

Weight: 4.65 lb (15.75"); 5.97 lb (23.6")

Materials: Hand-assembled strips of birch veneer

Light source: One E26 socket, max 60W incandescent or 15W LED; bulb not included (Tom Rossau recommends a warm 2700K A19/A60 LED of 5–8W)

Dimming: Dimmable with dimmable LED bulbs and a compatible wall dimmer (not included)

Mounting: Wall-mounted on a 5" × 5" wooden backplate, 0.6" deep

Assembly: Arrives fully assembled

Electrical: 120V, UL listed (US version)

Origin: Handmade in Copenhagen, Denmark

Warranty: 2 years (24 months) against manufacturing defects

Lead time: Made to order in Copenhagen: delivered in about 10 weeks (70 days).

Item numbers (MPN): 15.75 in (40 cm): 564; 23.6 in (60 cm): 565

Features

The original TR5 ring of twisted birch strips, wall-mounted

Two diameters: 15.75" and 23.6"

Natural birch on a 5" wooden backplate

One E26 bulb, dimmable with a dimmable LED

Handmade in Copenhagen

Best for

Living room walls, beside a bed, hallways, stairwells, dining rooms and hotel corridors. Every Tom Rossau lamp is still built by hand in the company’s own workshop on Frederiksberg Allé in Copenhagen, by a single lamp builder who signs the card that comes with it.

Why we carry it

We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and the TR5 wall light is one of the few sconces that works as art when it is switched off. It brings the handmade warmth of Danish birch to a wall without taking up an inch of floor or table.

Buy once: durability and care

Dust the birch strips with a soft, dry brush; keep the lamp away from water, steam and humid rooms, because moisture softens the veneer and can make stained colors bleed. Like all natural wood, the birch slowly develops a patina and may shift its shape very slightly over the years: Tom Rossau calls it a living material. Tom Rossau covers manufacturing defects for 2 years.
