Mel Moskowitz moved west in 1956 to run the California side of the business, and the company now designs from Venice Beach under the Nova of California name. We have been curating design-led lighting since 2009, and Nova earns its place for one reason: the proportions look expensive and the build is meant to stay in the house for years.

Care, bulbs and dimming

Dust with a dry cloth and skip harsh cleaners. Nova says a damp cloth is fine on clear or mirrored glass, and that a standard touch-up pen covers minor scratches on wood or gold leaf. The 9W LED light source comes with the lamp; for dimming, Nova recommends quality dimmable, flicker-free LEDs.

Want to know more about what you are buying? The factory LED in this pendant light is 14W and puts out 800 lumens, using a fraction of the power and giving off far less heat. An incandescent bulb has a slightly rounder, warmer glow but runs hot and wears out sooner. If you ever swap bulbs, match the base type and pick a dimmable, flicker-free LED in warm white so the light stays consistent.
