Eguchi Toys explains the idea: the first layer helps children learn the animal itself, the second shows the place it lives in nature.

Specifications

Brand: Eguchi Toys

Designer: Kentaro Eguchi (founder of Eguchi Toys)

Type: Wooden animal puzzle with frame

Animal: Reindeer

Materials: Pine and birch plywood

Piece thickness: Nearly 2 cm (about ¾ in), per Eguchi Toys

Number of pieces: Not published by the distributor

Product dimensions: 10 × 8 × 1 in (25 × 20 × 3 cm)

Package dimensions: 12 × 9 × 2 in (30 × 23 × 5 cm)

Weight: 2 lb (0.91 kg), product/box weight as listed

Age: 3+ (distributor rating)

Safety testing: US CPSIA tested (per distributor)

Origin: Designed and made in Taiwan

Item number (MPN): T122

UPC/EAN: 4713410531229

Features

Two-layer wooden frame: the animal, then its natural habitat

Pieces nearly 2 cm (about ¾ in) thick, easy for small hands to grasp

Pine and birch plywood with a smooth natural-wood feel

10 × 8 × 1 in (25 × 20 × 3 cm); 2 lb with box

Ages 3+; US CPSIA tested; designed and made in Taiwan

Best for

Children 3 and up who like animals and a challenge, quiet-time play, and a playroom shelf or a desk where it can stand on display. Eguchi Toys was founded in Taipei in 2015 by Kentaro Eguchi, a Japanese designer who studied fine art at the School of Visual Arts in New York, holds a Montessori teaching qualification and founded Ivy's House Montessori kindergarten in Taipei in 1997. His team of designers, carpenters and preschool teachers designs and makes the toys in Taiwan, and the line has been shown at Maison&Objet in Paris (2017, 2019, 2024) and the Nuremberg International Toy Fair (2019, 2020). Every toy starts from what children are working on at each stage, then gets a shape and palette an adult is happy to see every day.

Worth the investment

At $85 it's priced like a keepsake, not a disposable puzzle. Thick wood pieces survive years of being tipped out and put back, and the finished puzzle earns a place on a shelf instead of in a cupboard.

Buy once: durability and care

Wipe with a soft cloth and clean water, then dry it right away. Skip alcohol and chemical cleaners, and keep it away from direct sun, heaters and air-conditioning vents, which can make wood expand, contract and crack. (Our advice, based on the wood-care guidance Eguchi publishes for its furniture; VICI doesn't publish care instructions for this toy.)

Frequently asked questions

What age is the Eguchi Toys Reindeer Puzzle for?

Ages 3 and up, per the distributor.

How big is the Eguchi Toys Reindeer Puzzle?

10 × 8 × 1 in (25 × 20 × 3 cm).
